Office Business Gateway 2011 opens up new ways for developers
The Office Business Gateway 2011 (OBG2011) empowers developers and users to reduce costs of development, and increases flexibility, manageability, and extensibility when integrating their business focused and specialized applications into Microsoft® Office, Internet Explorer® and some other end user applications (e. g. the Acrobat products from Adobe®). OBG2011 helps mitigate the problem, of “information overload” through the concept of contextual integration, where only relevant information within the context of their current task and situation is presented to the business user. In addition to the free client runtime, this release includes OBG Developer Studio 2011 - a set of useful developer tools - and provides choice regarding the deployment of solutions by bridging Rich and Reach Client models.
Office Business Gateway helps to avoid the time-consuming switching between applications. Besides the well-known Microsoft® Office integration, the new version can be used to integrate solutions in Internet Explorer® and some other client applications.
With the release, we further extend our support for developers. OBG2011 includes developer tools, the OBG Developer Studio 2011, which helps ease the integration of applications in Microsoft® Office. Dr. Stefan Zimmermann, Chief Technology Officer of Combionic explains: „The new Microsoft .NET 4.0 based OBG 2011 makes integration of information from third-party applications e. g. Microsoft® SharePoint®, Cloud Storages or CRM systems in Microsoft® Office, Internet Explorer® and Adobe® Reader® much easier and less painful for organizations. Additionally we provide OBG Developer Studio 2011 in this release. It includes a metadata editor directly integrated in Visual Studio® and OBG class templates. This enables developers to quicker add new OBG regions or operations to their projects, since they are automatically created in Visual Studio®.
Furthermore OBG2011 provides a flexible server-based deployment model. „Office Business Gateway solutions can be distributed as every other Rich Client solution. However Office Business Gateway offers the additional opportunity to provide your solutions server-based without dispense of the Rich Clients advantages. Therefore the advantages of “codeless clients” - for example web browsers - are combined with the advantages of Rich Clients - for example Microsoft® Office. This works similar to web-based solutions – through “download on demand” in combination with local caching of the solutions logic, which avoids additional unnecessary downloads. Updates of the solution can – again similar to web-based solutions – be deployed on the server and are automatically distributed to the clients. There is no need to install the solution on the client directly, which often needs to be done with other Office Integration technologies. This means extensions, adjustments, situation- or user-based user interfaces are executable ON the client WITHOUT new deployment TO the client.” illustrates Dr. Zimmermann.
With OBG2011, we also change the license model from user-based licenses to developer licenses and implement a subscription model, where the developer licenses are valid beyond the subscription period (perpetual license). The OBG client runtime is for free and can be passed royalty free to customers in combination with the developed solution.
